Why Data Migration is Necessary

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

As data experts, we get all types of questions and challenges from our partners and clients. Sometimes, we are asked, why do we need to migrate data? Let's discuss some reasons why you would need or want to migrate your data.

Data Frustration

Our clients and partners are usually frustrated with the nuisance and details involved to determine what should or should not be moved from their legacy system to the new platform system.

For instance, one of our clients was ready to sunset an older legacy system but still needed the data that was stored in that system into the new system. They were frustrated in knowing what to move, how to move it, and when to tell if it was ready for prime time in the new system to be used by their users.

STRM Consulting, LLC partnered with the client to understand both the data requirements and the legacy system to effectively plan and implement a strategy to migrate the data to the new system. In addition, provide documentation to help reference existing and future stages when the client or team needs to review requirements such as field mapping criteria.

Lack of Technical Skills

Some of our clients are focused on their business not on technical data skills; therefore, there are times they do not know if it is needed to migrate data to another system to fulfill their business requirements. Organizations at times need their data evaluated to determine the health state it is in to properly migrate to a new system.

STRM Consulting, LLC possesses the expertise and skill sets to perform data analysis based on requirements to determine data migration risks before implementation. This helps to determine the best course of action to ensure data is accessible and implemented correctly in the new system.

One Time Data Conversion / Movement

There are times when there is a need to move data to another platform for proper investigation of a business issue outside of the production environment.

For example, data quality analysis to identify different levels that are acceptable or not acceptable by the business for corrective actions can be invasive or process intensive on the production system that other users are using for their day to day operations. This could cause system slow downs that can impact daily usage. Therefore, we will elect to copy or migrate the data to another system to conduct extensive data analysis and produce results for quality decision making and actions before performing changes in the production system.

There are other multitude of reasons to migrate your data to another system and having the right data experts to partner will advise, guide and recommend the best course of action in your Data Migration Strategy.

STRM Consulting, LL is the right partner for you to help guide you through that process.
